Amalia Picchi, 93 of Wheeling, WV. died on Sunday October 28, 2018 at Wheeling Hospital.

She was born January 31, 1925 a daughter of the late Thomas and Marie Emelyn (McMillen) Thoner in Wheeling, WV.

Amalia was a music instructor for the Buckeye Local School District and a private voice and piano teacher in Wheeling. She attended St. John Catholic Church and held a Masters degree from West Virginia University.

After college she studied voice in New York for a year with a teacher affiliated with the Metropolitan Opera. She went to Pittsburgh as a student and teacher for McGrail School of Opera at Duquesne and performed in many lead roles during her time there.

She also met her husband Anthony Rocco Picchi while there.

She taught 4th grade for a year at St. John Grade School and was a voice instructor at Mt Dechantel Academy as well as a music instructor at the Home of the Good Shepherd (Lady of the Valley School for Girls) with her husband.

Amalia was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a sister Margarite Rush.

She is survived by her children, Tonie (George) Sivert of Wheeling, WV and Thomas (Malissa Vavra) of Clarksburg, WV.

In addition she is survived by a sister Marie Straka of Flowery Branch, GA, two nieces Carol Rush and Roberta Connolly and two nephews John Rush and Eric Straka.

She also leaves behind several great-nieces and nephews and her caregiver Barbara Harkness.

Family and friends will be received at the Bauknecht-Altmeyer Funeral Homes & Crematory 441, 37th Street Bellaire, Ohio 43906 on Friday November 2, 2018 from 3 until 8 pm.

A vigil service will be held at 7:45 pm. Funeral liturgy with Mass will be held at St. John Catholic Church in Bellaire, Ohio on Saturday November 3 at 11 am with Fr. Daniel Heusel officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Wheeling, WV.

Memorial contributions can be made to the St. John Grade School by going to “TMCFunding.com”.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to the entire staff at Good Shepherd as well as the nurses and aides of Wheeling Hospital 3rd and 5th Floors and the Bethlehem Fire Department for their excellent care and compassion.
