We have no words for the sorrow we feel for the loss of this great man. Admired by many, Respected by all, and loved by everyone who knew him. Coach had a great life and lived it well. He married the girl of his dreams and what a wonderful couple you both made . Had a son (Jaybo) and raised him to be a MAN. What more could a father ask. Prayers go out to all of you at this time but I must say I am a better man for knowing him. God Bless You All.

Joanne and family, so sorry to hear about the loss of Jan, Jan was a nice person to be around and a great basketball coach. It will be odd not to see you guys together. May prayers be with you and your family. The only negative thing that I can say about Jan is that he was a BROWNS fan.May the lord be with you at these sad times.

I am saddened with the news of Jan’s passing. He lived his life with a big personality and a strong sense of loyalty to his friends and community. He represented the town like no one else. I remember fondly the sports stories he shared. Love to Joanne, Jay, family members and endearing coworkers at Powhatan Elementary.

So sorry to hear of Jan's passing. I have such great memories of him at River HS during my days coaching in Woodsfield in the 70s and early 80s. He was one of the funniest guys I ever met and I always looked forward to seeing him. Haven't seen him in many years but my guess he left a wonderful family and a great many friends with a ton of memories.

I was so heartbroken to hear of Jan’s passing. He was such a caring and compassionate man. He truly exemplified the definition of giving. I will always remember how wonderful he was to my Dad, Coach DeLongo. He treated him with so much respect and love. My dad truly thought the world of Jan. He was truly a servant of God. May encampment of angels surround you with our Lord’s love and peace at this time. Joanne, I will so be lifting you and all your family up in prayer for strength and healing. We love you.

Our condolences to Joanne, Jay and all the family. I taught with Jan for 29 years and I was always impressed with his integrity and rock-solid values. Somehow, you knew he would do the right thing. Jan’s presence filled every room and his personality was magnetic. He made a mark on many people. A great man and an excellent teacher, Jan was a true Powhatan icon. May he Rest In Peace.

I'm still in shock over the news. I was fortunate enough to spend a lot of time with coach Saner because he was a friend of Dad. A lot of his players went into coaching and teaching because of our respect and love for Coach Saner. No town or city can ever replace a man like him. He made Powhatan a great place because of his leadership. Coach DeLongo and Coach Majors were there following Coach Sanders lead and I am forever grateful for that experience. You have to be a great teacher to be a great coach. Coach Saner was that and even a better man. I cherish every memory of him. Lou Tolzda gave us a basketball court, Coach Saner taught us how to use it. The world needs more people like Coach Saner. He cannot be replaced.

He was such a great man an awesome teacher. He taught me everything I needed to know about health in 8th grade. I will always remember his voice. Never had to yell at a student. If the look did not get you him saying your last name would. Great man. Thoughts and prayers from my family to yours.

Dear Joanne, Jay, and Jan's family. I am so very sorry for your loss. In fact, it is all of Powhatan's loss. When I would come home and Jan was in the group, I usually sought him out, so that we could discuss the status of the Browns or Indians. One of my favorite pictures of Jan is him sitting down at one of our picnics and a young Jay, standing behind him, with his arms around Jan's neck. The love for Jan represented in that picture is symbolic of how so many others also felt about Jan. When I think of Powhatan, it always has Jan as part of the great history of our great town. He will be truly missed by so many. I was privileged to have known him.

Coach Saner was one of my 7th and 8th grade football coaches. He also assisted with the high school. We were blessed with great coaches and I was fortunate to have him invest in my life. I left the valley in 1987 to start a coaching career of my own. I went one to enjoy much success and have always credited my jr. high and high school coaches for helping shape me. I was not always the most willing to conform but over the years I really gained an understanding of how fortunate I was. Thank you Coach Saner, I will always remember you.

Coach Saner was a teacher and a neighbor back on Clark Street/Riverview Road. He was the first person who ever told me that I really could run fast - gave me the confidence to love running. Since then, I have ran many races including half- marathons and races all over the country. Thanks Coach Saner! You have left quite a legacy with many kids from Powhatan

I still remember the many things Jan taught us in health class. He always kept it interesting and you could tell he loved to teach. The same goes for gym . I was not a natural athlete but Jan always encouraged me to be better than I thought I could be. He will truly be missed by many. He was my moms garage buddy. I know she will feel his absence in her life. My sincere condolences to Joann and Jay.
