Joseph K. Helms, 87 of Shadyside, Ohio passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at his home under hospice with his family surrounding him.

Joe was the son of the late Lloyd and Florence Helms.

He was retired from the Ohio Bell Telephone Company, a member of the Lincoln Avenue United Methodist Church in Shadyside, a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 52 Bellaire, Weyer Lodge 541 F & AM and Order of Eastern Star 489 Captina Chapter and a US Navy veteran.

Joe was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and loved his family more than anything.

In addition to her parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Betty Zonker, Frances Scotka, Norma Gentile and Judy Boston and one brother, John Helms.

He is survived by his wife, Janice Bulger Helms of sixty years, his daughter, Kelly (James) Amato and son Scott all of Shadyside, Ohio; grandchildren, James (Jess), Eric (Kayla), Adam (Sara) and Karlie (Ian) Underation and his three great grandchildren, who were his pride and joy, Jace, Grace and Beau Amato. Also two brothers, James (Trudy) and Jerry (Joan) both of Florida and several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be received at the Bauknecht-Altmeyer Funeral Homes & Crematory 441 37th Street Bellaire, Ohio on Tuesday from 2 pm until time of services at 6 pm with Chaplain Margie Carr officiating. Interment in the Holly Memorial Gardens at the convenience of the family.

The Belmont County Council of the American Legion will conduct Full Military Honors on Tuesday at 5:45 pm at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lincoln Avenue United Methodist Church or the St Mary Catholic Church or Valley Hospice South’s Liza’s Place by going to TMCFunding.com.

Loved seeing my uncle joe on visits back to Ohio. Share my bday with my aunt Janice. Love them both dearly. My dad really liked my uncle Joe. I’m sure my dad was waiting at the gate for him.
