Mary Philippa Lewis, 90 of St. Clairsville, Ohio died Saturday, October 8, 2016 at  Liza’s Place in Wheeling, West Virginia.

The daughter of the late Vincent (Luisi) Lewis and Rose Ianzito Lewis, she was born June 17, 1926 in Bellaire, Ohio, where she lived prior to moving to Akron, Ohio in 1946. She returned home to Belmont County in 2011.

A graduate of Bellaire High School and the College of Wooster, she was a member of The Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Alpha Theta honoraries, President of the Women’s Self-Government Judicial Board, shared in the Galpin Prize for the Outstanding Graduating Senior and was one of fourteen graduating participants in its highly-touted Round Robin (ongoing since 1947). She received an MBA in Finance and Investment from George Washington University.

Prior to her return to St. John’s Catholic Church in Bellaire, she was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Akron. Mary was a lifetime member of the Phi Betta Kappa Society, the Bellaire High School Alumni Association, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. She was a member of  the Sons of Italy Lodge 754 and a charter member of The Great Stone Viaduct Historical Education Society.

After working at the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company of Akron in the Economics and Tax Departments, she was selected as a Management Intern by the Internal Revenue Service in Washington, DC where she coordinated international tax seminars, taxpayer education courses and retired as Senior Staff Assistant to the Assistant Commissioner for Employee Plans and Exempt Organizations. Mary was a Certified Financial Planner (College of Financial Planning, Denver, Colorado). At her retirement, she received the Albert Gallatin Award from the Department of the Treasury.

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her brothers, Joe Lewis (his wife, Peggy) and Pat Lewis, nephew, Albert Lewis; and great nephew, Robert Williams.

She is survived by her nephew, Vince (Sandy) Lewis of Shadyside, nieces, Patrice (Robert) Williams of Shadyside, and Penny Lewis Fox of St. Clairsville, Ohio. Also great nieces and great nephew, Sherry Lewis (Clint) Wach of Hilliard, Ohio,, Jill Lewis (Autumn) of Shadyside; Brad (Margo) Lewis of Chula Vista, CA;  Erica Williams (Chris) Lotte of Pickerington, Ohio, Natalie Fox of Columbus, Ohio and Jen Fox of St. Clairsville; great great nieces and nephews, Anthony and Chase Wach, Paisley and Luke Lotte; and Angelo and Devina Lewis.

Mary was a devout Catholic, a lifelong student, a dependable and generous family member and a loyal friend with a great sense of humor, she will be missed by all….”A life well-lived”.

Family and friends will be received at the Bauknecht-Altmeyer Funeral Homes & Crematory 441 37th Street Bellaire, Ohio on Wednesday from 10 am until 11:45 am. Funeral liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at the St. John Catholic Church in Bellaire on Wednesday at 12 Noon with Fr. Daniel Heusel, as Celebrant. Interment in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Bellaire, Ohio.
